Angle Lake News: an Aquatic Plant Survey and a Call Out for lake dwellers to become stakeholders.

The city is beginning an aquatic plant management effort for Angle Lake that is made possible through Department of Ecology grant funding. Herrera Environmental Consultants will begin the first step with a comprehensive aquatic plant survey and bathymetry mapping on August 14. I will confirm this date soon so that lake residents are aware that Herrera will be out on the water all day conducting successive passes on the lake in a grid pattern and plant sampling. The activity may be interesting to some, curious to others. 

The next phase will involve presentation of findings at future stakeholder’s meetings and begin discussing what the Integrated Vegetation Management Plan (IAVMP) looks like. My plan is to have representatives from: lake property owners, City departments (Public Works, Parks, Community Development), King County Lakes program/Noxious Weeds, and WDFW. 

 

I am reaching out at this time to recruit folks who wish to be a member of the stakeholder’s group. I’m looking for lake residents that have an interest and have the time to give (maybe two or three people). We are looking at two VIRTUAL meetings, up to two hours each: 

1. First meeting (October?) to engage, obtain input on the review and the IAVMP goals, survey results, potential management techniques, and get ideas on what you are concerned about. 
2. Second meeting to finalize the IAVMP

NOTE: The Angle Lake Park will be closed at 6 pm so the Fireworks show will be for residents only. It is not a city sponsored event. It is a show paid for by the Angle Lake Shore Club Community. This is unfortunate, but true. No Public viewing place is available per the city of Seatac. The public is welcome at all the other following events, but not the fireworks.

A piece of lake history! In 2013, after a poor performance by the contracted firework display vendor, the Angle Lake Shore Club Board of Directors decided to terminate the relationship with the existing vendor and faced a difficult decision regarding which route should be taken as a result.

The choices were: 

A) Turn over to the City the responsibility for producing future firework displays from the shoreline.

B) Contract with a new vendor capable of providing a platform for performing a display in the center of the lake at a significantly increased cost. 

C) Build our own platforms, enabling a greater number of capable firework vendors to participate in submitting bids, resulting in substantial savings in production costs. 

A plan was developed to poll the community for a determination of direction. The resulting tally favored option C to build our own barges. 

The board assumed accountability for securing five primary investors; negotiating ownership and usage terms and condition agreements; organizing a membership capital campaign to finance a club matching contribution; establishing plans and materials; overseeing the assembly of volunteers to complete the build of seven individual barges with a total market value of over $65,000! (Note: 2014 dollars)

It is amazing what this community has accomplished. It is truly a rare instance to witness a neighborhood of our size venture into a project of significant complexity requiring full and complete collaboration, let alone successfully deliver what was set out to do. It is inspiring what this supportive community and the many talented volunteers had contributed in delivering a complete set of commercial quality barges as planned to become the launch point for the Angle Lake Fireworks show for generations to come!

2025 Angle Lake Shore Club (ALSC) Annual Fish Fest & Community BBQ

The 2025 Annual Fish Fest & Community BBQ was held on Sunday, May 4th and a good time was had by the over 124 attendees. Like last year the Fest was held at the Angle Lake Manor’s Beach Lot. It is the perfect location for our Fest. We look forward to a continuing collaboration! Thank you to the Queen, her Court and the entire Manor, for generously hosting us.

As with most years the food was the center attraction of our activity and Nick Nichols along with his team of Bruce Bryant, Nancy Erickson, Susan Knox, Joan Hassleman put out a first rate spread of salmon, burgers and huge dogs. Each year this team impresses with their organization and efficiency. A special shout out to John Lucas who helped Tani Rae collect kettles and extension cords to keep the coffee hot and provide ongoing hot water for the ever popular hot cocoa. Lina Yip jumped in and helped everywhere there was a need. We owe much gratitude to many people who helped clean up and return the beach lot to its prior state of pristine beauty. Many hands make light work and it was a lot of fun working together.

The Fishing Event was the center of attention for many participants. As a special treat this year Grant
Woolridge offered to teach his lucky fishing technique the day before the Fest. We didn’t have time to get the word out to many, but after his family’s performance this year, I am sure this would be a popular lesson should he offer it again. The Woolridge crew of 6 pulled in a record 21 fish!

A highlight of the day was little Adam (2 years old) catching his first fish and winning the Age 1 - 7 category with a catch of 7 1/2 inches. Andrew Carroll won the Age 8 - 16 age group and the Grand Prize for the days biggest catch at 16 1/2 inches. Then everyone’s champion was Hal Boynton (Age 92) winning the Age 60+ age group with a catch of 13 inches.

After lunch fishing awards were given out and then a spirited raffle of prizes commenced. The Anderson’s won the grand prize of a paddle-board at the exact moment Tony was saying to Brice, “We never win these things!” Ha! Never say Never!

Special Thank You to the team who organized the prizes, sold raffle tickets, went shopping and in general made it look like I actually knew what I (Jonathan) was doing! So thank you to Marge, Joan, Robyn and Rotem. I appreciate everything you do for me and the entire ALSC Community.
