Seeking Relief, We Got Two Johns!

Planning for a return to a full schedule from the two-year hiatus created by the pandemic, the club put out a call to membership for nominations to fill critical board positions. The plea for help produced two candidates, John Bennett, and Jonathan Standridge. Both received nearly unanimous approval from the voting membership in attendance, with the only dissenting vote (jokingly) coming from John Bennett himself!

What is to follow? 

The current board of directors and volunteers will gather on January 24th for a reorganizational meeting. At that time,  the position of President and Vice President will be assigned, and Treasurer and Secretary are expected to be reconfirmed. Completing these assignments will position the club to forge ahead with the 2023 Event Planning under new leadership. 

However, we are still seeking additional volunteer support from our membership to help plan, prepare and host events throughout 2023. Volunteering does not mean making a long-term commitment; it simply means committing to helping in whatever capacity you can fulfill. 

If you recognize and appreciate the club's value to your community, and you enjoy participating in one or more events each year, please consider investing your time to ensure that these unique traditions continue.

Want to have more meaning in your life? Do you want to do something satisfying and of great service to your community? Then become an Angle Lake Shore Club volunteer!

Volunteers are needed to support all current positions. Becoming an ALSC volunteer is similar to helping a neighbor in need. The only qualification required is your desire to help someone in need. 

You don't need any specific skills; you don't need an advanced education or degree; you don't even necessarily need to know what to do! Our current volunteer team members are there to train, support, and guide new volunteers. All you need to do is sign up at the upcoming Christmas Party. Otherwise, please send any questions you have to the club at anglelakesc@gmail.com. 

Volunteering is not a choice; it's a responsibility. Without volunteers, we'd be without our club. Please consider becoming a board volunteer this year.

Please save the date of December 10th and join us for a warm and cozy end of the year soiree. There will be food and drink and there could be friends you have not talked with for a couple of years - perhaps new friends you have not yet met. 

We are scaling back the cost of admission which this year will be just $25/person or get a $5 discount off each ticket purchased before November 27th! As usual the gala is open only to shore club members but we would love to have new folks join and come celebrate with your neighbors. Get your Santa Caps ready!

Groundbreaking Activity in the Hood

Between now and 2024, the Angle Lake Station Area will experience a boon in housing projects which is expected to bring some relief to the region's housing shortage and will result in a significant increase of density brought into the area. Perhaps it will also bring some much needed retail, restaurant and entertainment establishments along with it to support this new urban growth.

Amelia Apartments
Address: 2929 South 200th Street 
Description: Construction of a 7-story apartment building with 108 units and 78 structured parking spaces. The project broke ground on 10/12 and expects to be market ready after an 18-month buildout.

TIME Apartments
Address: 19825 International Blvd
Description: The City recently issued land use approvals and construction permits for TIME Apartments. This project is adjacent to Angle Lake Station. It will replace the existing self-storage facility on the west side of International Boulevard. The development will include a seven-story mixed-use apartment building containing 289 residential units and associated amenity areas, 1,884 square feet of general retail space, 233 residential, and seven retail parking spaces. Construction is expected to start in Spring 2023.

Mercy Housing Apartments 
Address: 2650 S 200th St 
Description: New construction of a residential mixed-use building containing 130 units of permanently affordable housing for families earning less than 30%, 50%, and 60% of the area median income. Commercial office space will be located on 11,000 sq ft of the ground floor. The proposal also includes 103 parking stalls accessed via S 200th St and 26th Ave S; 25 for the office spaces and 78 for residential units.   Open recreation space and amenities will be available throughout the site. This project is in the early stages of review. They hope to get land use approvals early next year.

Angle Lake Nature Trail Restoration Help Needed

Alison Thomas, a Tyee High School Science Teacher, is coordinating a field trip with Forterra for as many as 40 students to do restoration work at Angle Lake Nature Trail on Oct. 11th from approximately 11 am to 2 pm.

When: October 11th - 11am until 2pm

Where: Angle Lake Nature Trail

Meet near the boat launch

Ms. Thomas is reaching out to the Shore Club to see if our members might be interested in participating in this event. Involvement may include chaperoning the field trip or acting as an extra pair of eyes in helping to ID invasive species, making sure students are removing the correct targeted invasive plants. Or you may consider bringing your own supplies (gloves, shears, steel rake) and participating alongside other volunteers to help maintain a healthy, native environment.

Another idea suggested is for any Shore Club member with knowledge about how the former Hughes Property became part of the SeaTac parks system and of prior restoration efforts having occurred here to take a minute or two to share that history.
