Lake Weed Watchers

The King County Noxious Weed Control Program is extending an invitation to all Angle Lake Residents to attend a free training program to help prevent the spread of noxious weeds in our lake.

2017 Lake Weed Watcher Training
Monday, June 19, 2017 (6:30 pm – 8:30 am)
The Lodge at Beaver Lake
25201 SE 24th St Sammamish, WA 98075

The Lake Weed Watcher Program trains volunteers to survey for aquatic weeds in small lakes in King County, Washington. Volunteers are trained to identify both native and non-native aquatic plants.  The goal of the project is to watch for populations of invasive weeds that are not currently known to occur in King County or that have a very limited distribution, but have the potential to spread and cause damage.  Detecting these weeds early allows us to stop them before they get too entrenched to remove.

Attend the Free Training to learn:
  • How to identify aquatic weeds and native plants
  • How to do a lake survey and submit data
  • How fun it is to be a Lake Weed Watcher!

Volunteers need to provide:
  • A small boat (e.g. canoe) and a place to launch it (if you don't live on a lake you use the public boat ramp at Angle Lake)
  • Personal flotation device (PFD) and any other required water safety equipment
  • Ability to attend this one training session
  • Approximately one field day in early July and one field day in late August or early September

The majority of the session be in the “classroom” however will also include time at the waterfront at the end of the training for more plant ID and equipment use training.

If interested attending, please RSVP to Ben Peterson, King County Noxious Weeds Control Specialist by sending email to ben.peterson@kingcounty.gov or phoning (206) 477-4724. The training is open to returning and new volunteers. Also, feel free to relay this invitation to anyone interested in helping keep lakes healthy.”

Got Barges?

Yes we do!  I am awestruck in what this community has accomplished. In my opinion it is a rare instance to see a neighborhood of our size venture into a project of complexity and magnitude with complete and full collaboration - let alone successfully deliver what they set out to do. It is truly amazing that this supportive community and many talented volunteers delivered a complete set of commercial quality barges as planned for the purpose of becoming the launch point for the Angle Lake Fireworks show for generations to come!

Seen here, three of the seven barges connected.
I’m happy to report that the community effort to raise all funds necessary for the purchase of materials and the small army of volunteers who labored many hours constructing the Fireworks Barges has successfully completed the job in creating assets that are estimated at having a collective commercial value of over $60,000!

This is yet another clear indication and example of the great community in which we live in!

What’s Next:
The next phase is to design and develop an anchoring system to secure the barges into position when deployed. This is an essential element for performing a fireworks show from the center of the lake. The Club is actively seeking individual(s) from within our community who can lead and orchestrate this effort. If you have or can refer someone who has experience in this area, please contact the Shore Club at anglelakesc@gmail.com

A separate team is already forming with the goal of developing a process for routinely collecting and assembling two or more of the barges for deployment in all types of occasions. Besides using the assembled collection of barges for the 4th of July Fireworks Show, other deployments may include using them as gathering points for: ‘Socials at the ‘El’; as a log boom for the Hydroplane races; or a spectator platform for the Annual Blue Water Aquatics Swim Races.

Just imagine, evening socials at the El like this - but bigger!
Independency Day:
While plans and procedures for mobilizing and anchoring the barges remain outstanding, we are unable to support a fireworks show being performed at the Elbow. I am pleased to report that the SeaTac Parks Department will again host the fireworks display on Angle Lake launched from the Public Docks again this year. As has occurred in prior years, this will require that the swim area, beach, hillside and boat ramp will be off limits for public access and allows producing a smaller display using shells no larger than 3” due to the confined and control space.

If the club is able to finalize mobilizing and anchoring operations there is a possibility of enacting PLAN B which includes anchoring the barge collection off the Goulet Beach on July 4th. Then a group of pontoon boats can be scheduled to travel the Northern Leg gathering residents with lawn chairs and blankets and ferry them to and from the platform for viewing the 2017 fireworks show up close. More details will be shared later in June.

This is still only a concept at this time but we’d appreciate hearing any feedback from you on this idea!  Please submit your comments to the Blog Email at anglelakesc@gmail.com.

ALSC Derby Reels In Record Crowd

Nearly 200 residents, from infant to near centenarian, gathered along the shores of the Goulet and Kuglar beach properties to witness some of the best competitive fishing Angle Lake has seen in ages!

Photos from the event can be viewed by clicking

A total of 60 fish were reeled in for measuring with some being returned to the waters of Angle Lake while others were released to the barbecue to supplement the telling of many fish tales.

I could take this opportunity to share the details of this most successful event; however that information will be captured through the recollections of one of our hosts, Sandy Goulet and will be shared via our next upcoming Club Newsletter. Be on the lookout for the Summer Edition arriving in your email inbox by Mid-June.

As mentioned previously, this was one of the best attended Derby’s in recent memory. The draw certainly is partly due to our shared interest toward community fellowship; the beautiful natural surroundings of Angle Lake and the opportunity to spend a nice day with family and neighbors we refer to as friends, and their guests.  It also can be attributed to the restaurant quality barbecue cuisine that includes fresh King Salmon served up by our master chef and his assistants. But equally important in drawing crowds to our event is the big Raffle Drawing offering a chance to be chosen as a prize winner from the plethora of prizes provided by our generous commercial contributors!

I would like to take this opportunity to recognize and express a sincere appreciation to the following businesses for their contributions in making our ALSC Fishing Derby, Barbecue and Raffle a most successful event!
Please help express our gratitude toward these businesses by visiting them often!

And of course, to the Members of the Angle Lake Shore Club, Residents and Guests who made generous purchases for strings of Raffle Tickets. The proceeds from these sales not only help support this event and the purchase of the additional prizes but also help fund our other events throughout the year.

Without your generosity and participation, all of this would not be possible – THANK YOU!
