Your Dive Supports Our Food Drive!

Please consider joining with the ‘courageous’ few who symbolically leap into the new year by literally diving into the frigid waters of Angle Lake at the annual Polar Bear Plunge. The original concept of the plunge was simply a wacky thing to do. However, a more sensible reason has been introduced to support a local food drive effort to help reduce hunger in our area.

We are encouraging all participants and spectators to bring donations of cash, check and/or non-perishable food items to be given to the Highline Food Bank to assist in their effort of providing meals to members in our community who frequently suffer from the effects of hunger. Food Bank shelves are typically quite empty at this time of year due to increased demand over the holidays. Non-perishable food donations and/or cash contributions are greatly needed to help restock the shelves to meet the ongoing demand that is present in our community.

If everyone in our neighborhood would commit to donating just $10 each the Highline food bank would be in a far greater position to serve client needs throughout the entire year! And for every $10 donation, the donor will in return receive one additional chance to win some fabulous prizes!  See the Official Flyer for details. Non-perishable packaged food donations will also be accepted and be awarded additional opportunities for prizes.

End of Year Progress Report

As reported in an earlier blog post (Mid-Year Check Point), the Shore Club Board of Directors had targeted two key items to focus additional attention on this year:
  • Getting younger families with children involved in lake activities
  • Bringing a major fireworks display back to the center of the lake.
The following is a year-end report on how the board made progress toward these two goals:

  • Family Centered Events
We had witnessed an increased attendance for the Spooktacular Halloween Boo Cruise and the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony; however attendance for the Christmas Boats and Santa Cruise realized a slight decrease in the number of children particularly along the North Shore and Mobile Home Park.  The assumption is that the extraordinarily rainy weather may have prevented people from venturing outdoors to see Santa, or perhaps it was because many were satisfied with their previous visit and photo opportunities with Santa during the Tree Lighting Ceremony that prompted them to remain indoors warm and dry instead.

While the newly added Hydroplane Racing Weekend was not sponsored by the Angle Lake Shore Club, we were very encouraged to see the number of families involved in the races and for our neighboring families who visited the racing pits to ask questions and get up and close with the race boats and operations. For all intents and purposes, this was a highly successful event and achieved all the goals and objectives of being a unique and interesting event for this area and we are hopeful that additional races to be considered in the future.
  • Fireworks Barges
At last report in June ‘16, the overall fundraising effort was at 70% of the targeted goal of $24,000. Unfortunately, the ‘gofundme’ online fundraising campaign that was created did not produce the results expected, falling far short of the $8,000 objectives. I am happy to report however that four generous donors had contributed a total of $550 through this online account with the funds having been combined to the overall effort.  To date, the club has received a total of $19,360 in private party pledges and cash contributions all from neighbors living on or in immediate vicinity of Angle Lake.
It is also with great pleasure that we report that our volunteer laborers have completed building four of the seven barges required and were launched last weekend (12/18/16)! The remaining three barges will be completed within the upcoming months in 2017, thus ensuring the capability of returning a major fireworks display to the center of Angle Lake next summer!

I personally am grateful for the many thoughtful and generous neighbors that make up our lake community, and I am truly amazed at what can be accomplished when we all come together.

Thank you for your support.

You can expect another progress report in early spring at which time I’m hopeful that we can report that all barges have been completed and deployed; that the firework display contracts have been signed for a mid-lake Independence Day Show; and that Hydroplane Racing will return to Angle Lake for a second year.

Like A Good Neighbor, Lonnie Is Always There!

The Good Neighbor Recognition Program is a city-wide recognition program, where SeaTac community members are encouraged to nominate individuals and/or groups for their acts of neighborly/community goodwill. Nominations allow community members to call attention in a positive way to the activities that the nominee has contributed to their neighbors and community by being an example of a ‘good neighbor’.

It is with great enthusiasm that I announce that an Angle Lake neighbor received the following nomination by some “Friends on Angle Lake”. The following is what was submitted in the nomination:
“Lonnie Goulet, currently the President of the Angle Lake Shore Club, is the guiding force and effervescent energy behind the wonderful community based activities on Angle Lake. Without Lonnie’s passionate vision, well this would just be another beautiful lake without any collective community esprit de corps. But more importantly, Lonnie answers seemingly each and every call from his neighbors when things need to be fixed, someone needs a ride, or we all just want to hear a good raucous laugh from the man with the big heart. There is no task too big or mountain too high to climb for Lonnie and his traveling smile and tool box.”

Congratulations Lonnie, on being a nominated community member! Our community is fortunate to have you involved. Awards will be presented to all nominees at the Regular Council Meeting on Tuesday, Dec 13th at 7:00PM in the Council Chambers at City Hall.

Please consider attending the awards ceremony in a show of support and appreciation for Lonnie and the other deserving nominees!

Calling All 12's

12’s can do some truly amazing things when we all pull together as one! They can smash world records, being recognized as the noisiest sports venue on the planet; they are often more feared by opposing players, more so than the Legion of Boom creating an average of 2.36 false start penalties per game; and they are even known to create their own recorded earthquake! It is because of this energy that we’re asking all 12’s to band together and focus their collective effort on creating a great Christmas for the less fortunate children in our community by supporting a ‘Holiday of Hope’.

All South End 12’s are encouraged to bring an unwrapped toy for a child valued at $25 or a gift card from Ross; Kohl’s; Game Stop; or Old Navy to Gregory’s Lounge at the Red Lion Inn and cheer for the Seattle Seahawks during the televised Tampa Bay Buccaneers game. Come prepared to compete for prizes in the Best Touchdown Dance Competition after each Seahawk 6 point score! There will also be a raffle drawing for prizes for those who have donated.

What: Holiday of Hope Toy and Gift Drive
Where: Gregory’s at the Red Lion Inn. 18220 International Blvd.
When: Sunday, November 27th start at 12:30 PM
Why: To support a generous cause, a great team and have a fantastic time do it!

Let the goodness of the 12’s shine through this Holiday Season and let your generosity bring the joy of the season to a child in need while we have fun as a community cheering for our Hawks!

It is our hope this holiday to see you there!
