- ALSC here since 1930, soon to celebrate 100 years
- ALM began as a Community Club in 1956 to manage the beach lot the 124 homes co-own.
- 1957 was the first fireworks show and has gone on ever since.
- Volunteers are needed to join the ALSC’s efforts to put on the fun events throughout the year as well as to replace the President and Vice President in 2027. Contact Jonathan Standridge, if interested, 206-693-1710.
- Jim Todd presentation of community art project. Airplane picture where each participant paints a 6 inch square and the finished product is assembled. Due by April and will possibly be hung somewhere in the city. Seatac is planning gathering spots before FIFA where art piece may be hung: Bull Pen, 186th and 99 old bank building and Airport Light Rail drop off.
- Presentation by Cassie Knavel, formerly Cichorz | Outreach Specialist Plant Protection | Pest Program Washington State Department of Agriculture Office: 800-443-6684 | Cell: 360-688-0560 | agr.wa.gov
- Japanese Beetles are easy to spread. One neighbor not treating can re-infest surrounding properties. If they are not controlled the state may slap restrictions on the area like halting plant sales and closing nurseries. Organic treatments are not as effective as the spray that targets the beetles biology. Portland tried to eradicate them for 2 years using organic means and failed. They had to change to the targeted treatment. Application has to be done multiple years running.
- Seatac is one of the largest infected areas. It is so serious Cassie has asked how they can work with our community to see if they can incentivize us to have a 100% response rate signing up for treatment.
- Cassie asked for volunteers to help get the word out and people singed up. It is the grass that is treated; if you have none, you still need to turn in the form that was mailed to you by the March 31st deadline.
- List of ALSC events :
- Fish Fest & Community BBQ (16 years running) is May 9th. It will be on the website.
- No Tapas this year as the volunteers are exhausted. It takes a lot to put it on and until we get new volunteers we are doing an easier event, a barge party potluck in the elbow of the lake using the 8 Shore Club built docks. We would ferry people without boats from some easily accessible location. It will be August 15th.
- December 5th is the Holiday Party for ALSC members. The cost for the catered meal is between $30 to $40. To become a member of the ALSC the cost is $20 per household per year. Click to join: https://angle-lake-shore-club.square.site
- WhatsApp instant messaging is how we stay connected as a community. It is very secure and we use it for various things like emergency notices, free stuff, event invitations and more. Rotem has a subgroup for flying drones. There is a quiet group that only admins can post notices that concern all. No one can reply in that group, so if you don’t want to be in a chatty group you can join that one. There is a form to fill out to join. The form allows us to monitor member requests to keep bad actors off the group who try to scam you or share unwanted services or photos. You can also make face calls to people all over the world and the call is free. https://forms.gle/V2GJPNbSzCSzvHHo7
- John Porter presented the fund raising goal for the fireworks. This year is the 250th anniversary of our country. Next year is 70th year anniversary of the club. He asked for 100 volunteers to chip in $1000 pledge each. $750 or $500 is also great, but he wants $100,000 raised so that we have $40,000 for this year’s show and $60,000 for our 70th anniversary show in 2027. Then we don’t have to fund raise later for next year. You can reach him with questions (206) 954-8736. To pledge online, click… https://forms.gle/aGSccKj7p5Wta35dA.
- The fireworks is only for the Angle Lake dwellers as the park will be closed this 4th of July. The city will therefore not help us fund the fireworks but they are giving us the permit for our show. The future of Angle Lake shows is in question, but this year is a go if we can raise the funds. We are working with Halo fireworks this year. They are having trouble setting the price of the show due to tariffs. So far the same size show as last year is guessed at $40,000. They will know more accurately in July. It cost $25,000 last year.
- John Porter is the focal for fundraising. He has pledge sheets for everyone. People who pledge will be contacted later after we are sure we have enough so that they can pay their pledged amount before the deadline. We will tally the pledges and send the total out in a blind email to all pledgees.
- Why doesn’t Alaska Airlines sponsor our fireworks? Because we are not a nonprofit and we don’t qualify as one. We are taking a look at possibly forming one just for the fireworks. We need to talk to a lawyer to see if this is feasible.
- The city may let Angle Lake Park be opened for a private event operator who would control and mange and pay for policing of the fireworks next year. The private party could contribute to the cost of the show as attendees would be charged an entrance fee and limited to the park capacity of around 3400. Two years ago the fireworks show was inundated by around 9,000 people. The city did not have the manpower to handle it so they closed the park last year and will again this year.
- Peter Kwon helped answer questions.
- Last year when the park was closed it went smoothly. The city advertised for over a month it would be closed early in the day. When the park closed people dispersed in an orderly fashion and did not flood the local streets.
- The city is cleaning up the Bull Pen.
- The boat launch will be repaired this year.
- Any update on hydroplanes on the lake? They will not return as it is illegal to close the lake from homeowner access for the 2 days of the event.
- Jonathan asked Tani Rae Standridge if she had anything to add. She thanked her ALM members for coming to the meeting.
- SPECIAL THANKS to Nancy Jones Erickson and Susan Knox and Joan Hasselman for managing the pizza and water set up.
- MEETING ADJOURNED
Minutes by Tani Rae Standridge

Friends of Angle Lake, near & far,
the Japanese Beetle has landed…
in my yard! Today I discovered 10 grubs in less than 3 ft while pulling chickweed in my garden, not in the lawn.
The good news is they are easy to spot and look exactly like the WSDA photo: white body, pale orange head & blackish tail. Unlike other grubs in my garden, they have tiny legs near the head.
This is real. I was totally surprised to find them already so prevalent & active. PLEASE consider getting the proposed WSDA treatment to protect our trees & gardens, the healthy habitat for so many vital creatures.
Your neighbor,
Susan Knox
What a shock! Thank you for the comment. It is imperative we treat and I really appreciate neighbors encouraging neighbors to get on board.
